Give today to expand healthcare access

Namaste. My name is Maya*. I am a 53-year-old woman from Nepal. I am diabetic. When my medication ran out, I struggled to obtain prescriptions to refill my supply without insurance.

In our community, we don't prioritize health or healthcare and often only seek medical attention when we become very ill. I struggled to find help and was overwhelmed by the high costs of medication. Feeling stressed and desperate, I asked every Nepali person I encountered for support.

A friend eventually informed me about Adhikaar and their services, including health insurance support. I visited Adhikaar the same day and learned about their support with healthcare access.

The health team at Adhikaar was incredibly supportive. They guided me through obtaining healthcare, helped me understand the documents and provided interpretation services, which were critical to accessing care. They even assisted me in emailing my documents to get my health card. However, the challenges were not over yet. I struggled to get an appointment at local hospitals and clinics, particularly Elmhurst Hospital, which had a waiting time of up to two months.

Adhikaar's team once again came to my aid, helping me navigate the appointment system until we secured an appointment. I was relieved. I was offered an interpreter, and I completed my annual check-up. This level of care was new to me. Despite the initial struggles, the dedicated help from the Adhikaar Health team made the entire process much smoother. I am so grateful.

At Adhikaar, our model combines one-on-one direct services, organizing, and advocacy to deliver better healthcare for all. Give today so that individuals like Maya* can continue to access the care they need.
