The 24-hour news cycle and social media have been abuzz this year with the U.S's continuing decline into authoritarianism. While our attention moves from post to post, article to article, we miss the deeper, more nuanced understanding of the various right-wing movements perpetuating this democratic backsliding.

In pursuit of a deeper understanding, PRA spent some time reading this year.

“The strategy of ‘good’ immigrant versus ‘bad’ immigrant ultimately targets all immigrants. We knew that would happen: as abolition teaches us, that’s how the system works,” says Silky Shah in an author Q&A with Ethan Fauré.

“For what is 'Make America Great Again' if not a gospel? It’s a nationalistic prosperity gospel, to be sure, mixed with a few 'American carnage' fire-and-brimstone threats if Trump’s ways are not followed,” says Matthew Taylor in the excerpt from his book The Violent Take it by Force.

Below are the Q&As, roundtables, and excerpts from the books we've covered in our Public Eye issues, and online. As the year winds down, we hope you have the time to read up and inform your resistance for the coming year.
