My oldest son, Peyton, once wrote a song. Several years ago, when he was still very little, he approached me and his mother with his fake little guitar, a piece of paper with some scratch on it, and an incredibly eager face. He’d spent the last several hours working on it, and you could tell he felt a mixture of nervousness and pride.
While the musical skill exuded in both his songwriting and performance was dubious, the simple lyrics from my five-year-old were spot on:
Christmas is not about candy canes or presents
It’s all about - Jesus!
Jesus is our Savior!
He died on the cross for man
He loves you!
To this day, we still remind Peyton of his song, but it’s healthy for all of us to remember the key line – it’s all about Jesus!
Christmas certainly isn’t about commercialism. But, it isn’t even about family or reflection – though those are great secondary values. The Christmas celebration is about the historic fact that the God of the universe chose to be born a helpless babe – the subject of a king’s wrath, the whims of hotel owners throughout Bethlehem, and the deeply challenging circumstances of His earthly parents.
He was born a King yet lived a life of one scorned, one whose calling was misunderstood, and one who would be killed. This unique historic event is worth celebrating, worth honoring, and worth changing your life for.
May you enjoy this special day celebrating Jesus, and, if you do not know Him, I am happy to share about what He means to me and connect you with a local pastor.
Merry Christmas to you and your family,
The Muzios
