Dear John,
I’m Captain Alejandro, writing from the Zero Tolerance Area of the Upper Gulf of California.
My crew and I are at sea every day, away from our families and loved ones, standing watch over wildlife that has no defense against the brutal, illegal nets set in these waters. While many people are gathering at home this holiday season, we remain here because the threats do not pause for the calendar.
The Vaquita Porpoise is the most well-known victim of this illegal fishery, but it is far from the only one. Gillnets left under cover of darkness entangle dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, rays, and countless other animals. In the past, we hauled these nets up heavy with loss - lives taken silently, never meant to be caught at all.
