I’m Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and I don’t use these words lightly: What’s happening to Officer James Brennand is a complete travesty of justice.
James is a decorated Army veteran. A dedicated police officer. A man who answered the call to protect innocent lives.
But now—because of a radical, anti-police District Attorney—he’s the one facing felony charges and the possibility of spending years or even life in prison.

It all began on the night of October 1st, 2022, when Officer Brennand attempted a traffic stop on a BMW that immediately fled, cutting off another vehicle and speeding onto the highway.
James didn’t pursue—he followed policy.
But when he ran the plates, he discovered they didn’t match the vehicle. Any reasonable officer would suspect the car was stolen—so James remained alert.
Then, the very next night, everything changed.
While responding to a disturbance outside a McDonald’s, James saw the exact same BMW—the one that fled him the night before.
Knowing the vehicle might be stolen and that the suspect had already shown a willingness to flee, he called for backup…
…but he also knew he had only seconds before the driver might run again.
So he approached the car.
He opened the door and ordered the driver—later identified as Erik Cantu Jr.—to step out.
Instead of complying, the suspect threw the car in reverse, slamming the door into James and dragging him backward as he tried to escape.
Officer Brennand was under attack. The threat was immediate. And the suspect had already demonstrated he was willing to injure an officer to get away.
In that moment, James did exactly what he was trained to do—he acted to stop the threat and protect his own life, the passenger’s life, and the public’s safety.
But now, instead of praising him for doing his job, Officer Brennand is being hunted by a politically motivated prosecutor determined to make an example out of him.
James is facing charges of aggravated assault by a public servant and deadly conduct—charges that carry 5 years to life in prison.
Life in prison… for protecting his community.
This is outrageous.
The legal battle ahead will be brutal, expensive, and exhausting. His future hangs in the balance.
His family’s future hangs in the balance. And we cannot let this injustice stand.
My friends at the National Center for Police Defense (NCPD) are committed to standing by Officer Brennand—but we can’t do it alone. His legal defense will be costly, and time is running out as his trial is expected in early 2026.
