Supreme Court upholds block on Trump’s military takeover
The Supreme Court upheld a lower court block on President Donald Trump’s attempt to send the National Guard to Chicago, ruling the president unlawfully used an archaic statute to federalize hundreds of state troops.
The court’s 6-3 decision deals a significant blow to Trump’s authoritarian goal of exerting military control over cities and integrating soldiers into routine policing. The ruling could also undermine his military intervention in Los Angeles and his attempted deployment in Portland, Oregon.
Missouri voters sue to pause GOP gerrymander until referendum vote
Missourians filed a lawsuit today asking a court to stop the state from using its new congressional map until voters have the chance to approve or reject the measure in a referendum. It’s the latest development in an escalating battle over a string of efforts by GOP state officials to place hurdles in the way of the referendum over the gerrymander.
We will not sit by and let America fall into authoritarianism. The ACLU has filed over 100 lawsuits and blocked some of the Trump administration’s worst policies and actions.
GOP strategy backfires – this could save democracy!
A surprising legal principle from conservative Supreme Court gun cases could help restore the right to vote as a first-class constitutional right. Drawing on his experience arguing his fifth case before SCOTUS, Marc shares how voting has been wrongly treated as a second-class right—subject to balancing tests and state convenience — while other rights receive strict protection. And he argues that the Constitution, history, and modern technology all support stronger, uniform safeguards for free and fair elections.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) joined Marc for a candid, wide-ranging conversation about governing through constant crises and confronting the growing threat to American democracy. Pritzker reflected on balancing Illinois’ budget, leading through COVID, responding to the migrant crisis, and pushing back against what he describes as Trump’s authoritarian tactics — from ICE and CBP raids in Chicago to attacks on civil liberties and democratic norms.
Drawing on Holocaust history and his own life experience, Pritzker explained how democracies erode and why the danger is real. Looking ahead to 2026, Pritzker argued that while democracy is the foundational issue of our time, elections are won on kitchen-table concerns like wages, rent, healthcare, and affordability, sharply criticizing Trump’s tariffs as hidden taxes on working families.
Since day one of the Trump administration, the ACLU has filed over 100 lawsuits to protect our most fundamental civil rights from attacks. And in more than 70% of our cases, we have successfully defeated, diluted, or delayed some of the Trump administration’s worst policies and actions – but our work is far from over.
ICYMI: In California redistricting challenge, GOP alleges illegal racial gerrymander
Republicans spent three days last week attempting to argue California’s new voter-approved congressional map is a racial gerrymander drawn “to favor Hispanic voters,” despite SCOTUS recently asserting it “was partisan advantage pure and simple.”
