Dear Neighbors,

This is very difficult to write, but on the evening of December 19, there was an attempted break-in at my home. My family and I are shaken up by this terrifying attack on our home. Thankfully, my wife and children were not there at the time. While we are safe, safety should not be a matter of luck. I am grateful for law enforcement's swift response to this incident, but we cannot regard this as an isolated occurrence. No public servant should have to assess their survival based on timing, and no family should feel their commitment to their community has placed them in danger.

The assassination of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, alongside the targeted attack on Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, was a stark reminder and reckoning. As an elected official, it raises a critical question that lingers: who will be next? Across our nation, intimidation is surging and it has become all too normalized. When leaders deploy dehumanizing language—when a president dismisses individuals as ‘garbage’—it transcends mere rhetoric. It sends a dangerous signal, one that reverberates through families across America, transcending party lines; it is fundamentally an American issue.

We can debate policy without resorting to threats. Violence is not a valid expression. Intimidation is not a form of discussion. Fear is not a hallmark of leadership. Every family has the right to feel safe at home. Every child deserves safety in their school. Every American—regardless of culture, faith, or origin—must have the freedom to engage in democracy without fear of being targeted. So, to that end, I urge Minnesota—and the entire nation: Reject political violence unequivocally and do so boldly and consistently. Choose restraint over rage. Demand accountability not excuses. Embrace community over chaos.

Please continue to care for one another, keep your loved ones close, and stand together against this growing trend of violence and harm. As Minnesotans, we know and value each other and our humanity. No one should live in fear—not my family, nor anyone else in Minnesota.

Sincerely,

Rep. Samakab Hussein (65A)

Minnesota State Representative
