Friend,

It was devastating to learn of Congressman John Lewis’ passing last Friday. He was the best of us, a titan of civil rights, and a true hero.

More than just the conscience of Congress, he was the conscience of America. He always stood for what was right, no matter the cost. During last year’s impeachment hearings, Rep. Lewis said: “When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something, to do something.” Rep. Lewis embodied that statement every day of his life, and we must do the same.

Through his Congressional leadership fighting to defend every voter’s ballot, end discrimination, promote gun safety, and protect vulnerable communities, Rep. Lewis forged and fortified pathways of equality and justice for this nation. And he maintained his belief in the power of youth to affect change. He worked tirelessly to support today’s youth led movements on racial justice.

That’s why I’m asking you to commit to supporting racial justice today by signing this pledge. This is not an empty commitment —  it is a promise that you will fight to achieve racial justice and equity every day.

Congressman Lewis was also one of the strongest advocates of the new Voting Rights Act, which would restore important protections against voting roll purges and the closing of polling places. This bill has been sitting on Mitch McConnell’s desk for over 200 days. We cannot honor and celebrate Rep. Lewis and his legacy without taking action. After committing to fight for racial justice, will you take action by emailing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act?
Commit to fight for racial justice
We must vote and elect a government that ensures racial equity for all. That starts by making sure that every vote is counted accurately. It is the minimum we can do to continue Rep. Lewis’ work and create a more just America.

Thank you,

Tom
