Gates and Gov. Cuomo Take Advantage of COVID-19 and Re-Imagine the NY Education System

In May of 2020, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that he had asked the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help “reimagine” the New York Education System. He outlined some of the technology-based goals which on the surface sounded like noble goals, then questioned the need for school buildings.  

“The old model of everybody goes and sits in the classroom, and the teacher is in front of that classroom and teaches that class, and you do that all across the city, all across the state, all these buildings, all these physical classrooms — why, with all the technology you have?” Cuomo said.

The response from educators and others was swift and harsh.

Russian Government Recommends Banning Wi-Fi and Cell Phones in Primary Schools

On July 17th, 2020, following other countries around the world that have taken action to reduce the use of Wi-Fi in schools and protect the health of children, the Russian Ministry of Health published recommendations to schools to ban the use of Wi-Fi and cell phones in elementary schools.

In the US, the Federal Communication Commission, which regulates the safety of wireless technology, still believes there is no evidence of harm from wireless technology and that a review of its health guidelines is not required.

Five children with special educational needs have killed themselves in the space of five months in Kent, a council official has revealed in a warning over the impact of school closures on pupils. Sarah Hammond, the county’s director of integrated children’s services, said ordinarily two or three children might be expected to take their lives over 12 months. All five of the children had special needs, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which may have made it particularly difficult for them to cope without the routine of school, she said.

Research published on Monday also pointed to a possible increase in child suicides across England during the coronavirus lockdown. According to the National Child Mortality Database, there were 25 likely child suicides in the first 56 days of lockdown.

Disturbing new revelations that permanent immunity to the coronavirus may not be possible have jeopardized vaccine development and reinforced a decision by scientists at UCSF and affiliated laboratories to focus exclusively on treatments.

Several recent studies conducted around the world indicate that the human body does not retain the antibodies that build up during infections, meaning there may be no lasting immunity to COVID-19 after people recover. Strong antibodies are also crucial in the development of vaccines. So molecular biologists fear the only way left to control the disease may be to treat the symptoms after people are infected to prevent the most debilitating effects, including inflammation, blood clots and death.

“I just don’t see a vaccine coming anytime soon,” said Nevan Krogan, a molecular biologist and director of UCSF’s Quantitative Biosciences Institute, which works in partnership with 100 research laboratories.
