Hi John, |
|
My co-founders and I started the Prospect back in 1989, with the premise that intellectual infrastructure and promotion of ideas matter, combined with a clear analysis of power so that necessary ideas can gain a hearing; and that we need an arena for those ideas that isn’t compromised by corporate advertising, billionaire sponsors, or the relentless drive for clicks in the service of digital advertising revenue.
I’m still here because I believe that we need the Prospect now more than ever. As we launched the magazine, after the Reagan years, too many commentators counseled that liberals needed to learn from conservatives, and too many liberals obliged. We at the Prospect disagreed. We insisted that we needed to be more creative and convincing New Dealers.
Today, we are at an even more consequential crossroads. Either Trump's legacy will leave the American republic fatally compromised--or we will rebuild democracy and renew a just society. We need to be imaginative, bold, and principled. This is what the Prospect was built for.
I’m still here because we don’t need another mass consumption publication, churning out hot takes and aggregated slop about the day-to-day news cycle. I’m here to provide context and narrative—to shape a conversation for policy makers and informed citizens so that we begin the arduous process of rebuilding. |

Last and not least, I’m here because of you, our readers. You are the reason why we do what we do. But a free press isn't free. So as 2025 winds down and we prepare for a pivotal year in the life of our country, I am asking for your affirmation in the form of financial support. Your dollars help us in myriad ways: they fund our writing fellowship program that trains the next generation of progressive journalists, they send reporters out into the field to cover stories the mainstream media ignores, and they pay for the reporting and analysis that cuts through the noise to tell you who has power and what they are doing with it in a way only the Prospect can.

Thank you and Happy Holidays.
