We’re writing to you today to alert you to one of the biggest threats to independent journalism today: Google AI.

You see, the number of visitors to the Common Dreams website from Google searches has dropped by more than half, and for a reader-funded nonprofit news outlet, that's a huge problem.

It's not because, suddenly out of the blue, after over 25 years of publishing, people became less interested in our reporting. In fact, traffic to our site from other sources remained strong or even increased during the same time frame.

The problem is that Google has increasingly supplanted links to our stories with Google AI overviews that frequently rip off the work of journalists like ours without credit or compensation.

So today, when you search for news on the genocide in Gaza or Trump's lawless immigration raids, you're far less likely to get a link to Common Dreams' coverage.

That's not just a hit on our ability to attract readers and draw new supporters to progressive reporting and commentary. This directly threatens the survival of a nonprofit news outlet that relies on reader donations.
