As I wrote you last week, our movement is at an inflection point. On Thursday, the President issued an executive order directing the US Attorney General to finalize a Biden-era recommendation rescheduling cannabis to acknowledge its medically accepted use in the United States. While this change does not legalize marijuana nationwide, nor does it harmonize federal cannabis laws with those of most states, it marks the first significant change to the federal government’s stance in over five decades. Our political opponents are well aware of this fact and they are already plotting their next steps.

Within hours of Trump’s announcement, prohibitionists announced their plans to legally challenge the rescheduling order in court — a tactic that could delay the process for many months if not years. They further announced that they will be pouring millions of dollars into ballot initiatives in multiple states seeking to repeal legalization.

These threats are real and they must be combatted with greater advocacy.
