Hi Friend,
In times of crisis it can be hard to look ahead, to hope and plan for the future -- but as an organization dedicated to protecting children, we must fight now for a better future.
That's why our COVID-19 pandemic response is not just focused on fighting the disease here and now. We're looking ahead to the long-term impacts of this pandemic -- and you're essential to that plan:
Step 1 (We're here right now): We respond.
Even before the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus a global health emergency, UNICEF was able to get moving quickly, rushing six metric tons -- that's more than 13,000 pounds! -- of medical supplies to the front lines.
Since then, we have dialed up communications to educate 1.7 billion people about the virus, stocked medical facilities across the globe with personal protective equipment (PPE) and medical supplies, upgraded water systems to boost handwashing for 56 million people, helped schools transition to at-home learning for nearly 80 million children and built up our defenses against malnutrition and violence. It's been an all-hands-on-deck mobilization, and we're so grateful to have your support throughout this crisis -- thank you.
Step 2: We recover.
We think of recovery in a few different ways. First, we must ensure that when a vaccine is developed, everyone can get it -- and that rising fear and misinformation about vaccines don't affect its widespread distribution. UNICEF's global immunization infrastructure will be critical to this effort and we are preparing now. We must also combat the rise in poverty caused by COVID-19's economic impacts with social protections like immediate cash transfers directly to families in need and increased access to health care systems.
Step 3: We reimagine.
Even in the thick of this pandemic, UNICEF is urging partners to reimagine a post-COVID world that is fit for all children -- and to act on that vision. Governments, the private sector and young people themselves must work together to help communities not only recover from all that the pandemic has wrought, but to build back better; to emerge stronger and more resilient so that every child is safe and protected.
We can come out of this better than before, Friend. But in order to do that, we must come out of it together. Please, consider joining the fight as a monthly donor today and be a part of building that better world >>
