John,
I am fighting for the rights, freedom, and dignity of every immigrant, refugee, and asylum seeker who calls our country home.
That’s why I recently visited an ICE detention center in my home state of Michigan, after my office received numerous concerning reports about the dehumanizing conditions there—such as frigid temperatures, inadequate food, a lack of translation services, and denial of detainees’ access to attorneys and loved ones.
The North Lake detention facility, which had been previously closed after multiple deaths and widespread reporting of abuse, is now detaining about 1,400 people—including a 19-year-old from my district. And just this week, we learned of the death of a detainee at the facility while ICE refuses to provide his family with even basic answers surrounding his death.
The for-profit private prison corporation GEO Group re-opened this notorious detention facility this year.
Even while congressional Republicans refuse to uphold their oversight responsibilities, my Democratic colleagues and I will continue holding ICE and the Department of Homeland Security accountable.
Will you join us in demanding the federal government shut down inhumane ICE and Border Patrol detention centers? Add your name now!
While visiting the facility, we learned there have been multiple suicide attempts, and there’s a concerning lack of medical staff.
Our neighbors are being held in dehumanizing conditions by this rogue agency that has torn them from their families and communities.
Earlier this year, I also witnessed inhumane conditions at a Customs and Border Patrol detention facility in my district, where hundreds of people were held simply for making a wrong turn on the bridge that connects Detroit to Canada. I demanded accountability and an end to secret detentions and disappearances.
I’ve also questioned U.S. citizens in congressional hearings to learn more about their experiences of being racially profiled, assaulted, and detained by ICE. I’ll keep fighting to abolish ICE and get them off our streets to keep our families safe and together.
Add your name to demand the federal government take the first necessary step of shutting down inhumane ICE and Border Patrol detention centers now.
I want you to know that I will never stop fighting for our communities and will never stop working to hold this fascist administration accountable.
In love and solidarity,
Rashida
