John,
Right now, we are standing on the edge of a health care cliff. Republicans in Congress have refused to pass legislation to extend the enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, which expire on December 31st. But there is hope.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries secured bipartisan support for a discharge petition that will force a vote on extending the ACA enhanced premium tax credits, and a vote is expected as soon as Congress returns in January. If the House passes a clean extension of the subsidies, it increases the likelihood that the Senate could act quickly.
Without that extension, more than 20 million people will see their out-of-pocket monthly insurance payments skyrocket, and many will be forced to go without health care altogether, having to choose necessities such as food and housing over health insurance.
With Leader Jeffries expected to force a vote as soon as the House returns the first week of January, we’re keeping the pressure on Congress to act. Rush a donation of $5 to power our campaign demanding an extension of the ACA premium tax credits to keep health care more affordable for tens of millions of people.

The people the Coalition on Human Needs advocates for are not in the top 1% of income earners. They are everyday people watching the costs of necessities like food, housing, and medicine increase while their wages or retirement income stay stagnant. They are people who will lose access to health care due to the nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts included in Trump’s Big Brutal Bill. They are the same people who will see their SNAP benefits drastically reduced, if not completely evaporated, thanks to the largest cut in the program’s history.
We’ve heard from supporters about what losing premium tax credits would mean for them:
From Los Altos, CA:
“I am self-employed and unmarried so I buy my own health insurance via ACA and Covered California. I've been paying $700 a month which is already steep, and I got a notice that it will now double to $1400 a month. This is not ok.”
From Rochester, MI:
“I am self-employed. My 2025 monthly premium for myself and my daughter is $993.89. My 2026 for the same plan is now $1571 per month, with a much higher deductible amount. In addition, my student loan payment has gone from $310 per month to $1500 per month. Completely unaffordable.”
There are millions more stories like these. In the richest country in the world, no one should have to go without access to quality health care.
