For years, Nancy Pelosi has handed the GOP everything they’ve wanted in terms of police militarization, executive secrecy, and indefinite detention without trial. 

Last week, Trump ordered thugs in generic “Police” uniforms from Department of Homeland Security agencies to descend on Portland to intimidate, bully, beat, shoot, and kidnap protesters. These abuses are alarming—but they should come at no surprise.

The long-standing militarization of domestic security invites inevitable deployment. The images we’ve seen from Portland are a long time coming, and could portend more across the country. 

That’s why this week’s events—while less widely reported—are so disturbing.

On the heels of the unconstitutional authoritarian crackdown apparent in Portland, the House Appropriations Committee just approved no-strings-attached funding for DHS. This is the Department that includes CBP, ICE, and other agencies imposing authoritarian restrictions on dissent in Portland—which we should see as a potential gateway to fully-fanged fascism nationwide. 

Portland is just the beta test for a national expansion of Trump’s crackdown. Will you help us fill Pelosi’s seat, so we can finally stop funding this growing threat of secret police? A small contribution goes a long way.

I don’t know what’s going on in Nancy Pelosi’s mind—and honestly, I don’t care to. Maybe she thought no one would pay attention to her slipping the DHS $50.72 billion dollars without even a slap on the wrist for their fascist nonsense. Or maybe, as the owner of multiple expensive properties, she secretly approves of gestapo policing tactics. 

What I do know is that the coup in Portland affects us all. Any of us could be next, as Trump threatens to roll out similar programs in New York, Chicago, and any city where working people stand up to the status quo. 

And—while mouthing concerns about how Trump’s stormtroopers “must be stopped”—Pelosi is right behind him with the checkbook.

Hundreds of Portland mothers chanted “Feds stay clear! Moms are here!” They stood up to this threat, and so can you. Chip in today, and when we’re in Congress, we’ll make sure the DHS is held accountable for every penny of our money they spend.

Unidentified all-powerful federal supercops belong in creepy sci-fi movies, not in our cities. We deserve better. Thanks for standing with us to help defend our democracy!
