If the health implications of a pandemic weren’t bad enough, the economic fallout of COVID-19 has millions of families seriously struggling. And the outrageous part is: Too many leaders in Washington don’t feel much urgency about it.
People are losing their jobs (and for many, their health coverage), and there’s no sure end in sight for when they can get back to work. That’s why Congress initially approved a $600 weekly federal unemployment benefit on top of state payments as part of its first COVID-19 relief package.
But those payments are set to expire at the end of the month, and as of now, Mitch McConnell and the Trump administration have no plans to renew them.
Think about that when you read about who has gotten help in this crisis. When it came time to bail out big corporations and wealthy friends, they didn’t blink. An office building in New York City that Trump has owned since the mid-1990s received government loans totaling at least $20 million. A law firm run by Trump’s longtime personal lawyer received between $5 million and $10 million. Several businesses connected to the Kushner family also received millions in bailout money. The list goes on and on.
Now, roughly 30 million Americans are out of work and relying on some form of unemployment insurance. And right now, these folks are wondering who gives a damn about them in Washington, D.C.
John, the truth is this is a bigger problem than this one issue. We need leaders in Washington who will put people over the special interest groups and wealthy companies that fund their campaigns -- every single time. That’s why I’m running.
