Confronting the Weaponization of Whiteness in Classrooms

Educators are not immune to the root behaviors we’ve witnessed in viral videos of white people threatening Black people with police intervention. White educators must acknowledge this pattern of behaviors so that they won’t inflict harm on Black students. As viral racist incidents quickly disappear from public discourse, we challenge white teachers to keep those moments top of mind and reflect on their own biased behaviors in classrooms.

Celebrate the Lives of Two Change Makers

We’re celebrating the lives and work of Rep. John Lewis and the Rev. C.T. Vivian. We’re eternally grateful for their lifelong, courageous activism. As we remember their relentless pursuit of equality, join us in continuing to work for justice and liberation for all. And encourage young people to join us in holding Rep. Lewis, the Rev. Vivian and other change makers as models for who we can be when we decide to make “good trouble.”

Check Out What We’re Reading

“When professionals glorify grit, they glorify trauma. They erase systems responsible for trauma and put the responsibility on students to navigate these systems despite the fact that these systems were built for their white counterparts to succeed.” — Teen Vogue

“Despite the hand-wringing that occurs when the nation’s racial value system gets exposed, usually by unspeakable acts of violence, the reality is that this country has never done anything to eradicate the root cause of these atrocities.” — The Boston Globe

“The Trevor Project’s second annual National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health, the largest and most comprehensive of its kind, is shedding light on the urgent need for mental health resources among America’s queer youth. Of the survey’s 40,000 LGBTQ respondents ages 13–24, some 40% reported “seriously considered attempting suicide” in the past 12 months.” — Logo.
