Dear John,
My name is Kat Owens, and I am the Interim Legal Director at LEAF. Every day, I have the privilege of seeing the difference people like you make by supporting gender justice in Canada. Today, I’d like to share why your support matters more than ever.
We have made tremendous strides in advancing the rights of women, girls, trans and non-binary people, but that progress faces real threats. We see governments who know their laws violate the rights of trans youth, or of Muslim women, but who pass them anyway and tell us the courts should not be able to intervene. We see legal systems that, time and time again, fail survivors of gender-based violence.
That is why LEAF’s work is essential and why we keep going to court – to push back against these threats and to create the future we want to see. We stood beside trans youth in Saskatchewan and helped protect their right to fight for their Charter rights. We are advocating for Muslim women in Quebec so that they are not forced to choose between wearing a hijab or working in a school. We are supporting increased – and easier – access to financial compensation for survivors of intimate partner violence.
We can achieve gender equality in Canada, but it requires sustained advocacy. Your contribution today will strengthen ongoing litigation for gender equality rights across the country. That means improved access to justice for survivors, respect for the rights of trans youth, and inclusion rather than exclusion for Muslim women.
Will you give today to help us defend our progress and protect the future of gender equality?
Thanks to the generosity of Torys LLP, all donations made on or before December 31st will be matched, up to $10,000. This means your contribution will have double the impact.
