Open Appointments Application Process - What Else to Know

  • Board staff can answer questions about applying for a seat.
  • Appointing authorities are organizations that review applications and decide who to appoint to vacant seats.
  • You may apply for a seat after the twenty-one-day posting period but keep in mind that an appointing agency may have finished reviewing applications by that time.
  • Applications remain active for one year unless withdrawn by the applicant.
  • During that year, applications to a board may be considered for any vacancy on that board.

Request Information About Open Seats

Send questions about application timelines, special requirements, or amending applications to the board staff members listed on a board's Office of Minnesota Secretary of State (OSS) webpage.

Minnesotans are encouraged to become involved in their communities by serving on one of Minnesota's 289 Open Appointments boards, councils, task forces, and advisory councils.

Based on Minnesota's Open Appointments Laws, the Secretary of State (OSS) acts as an administrator by maintaining the Boards & Commissions website for board staff to publish board vacancies, receive applications, and record appointments. OSS does not screen applicants or provide input on who to appoint.
