Hey, I’m Janelle Bynum. I’m a mom of four, an engineer, a business woman, a former Oregon State Legislator, and a proud Democrat representing Oregon’s 5th District in Congress.
My background is a little different than some of my colleagues in Congress. I grew up in a working-class family, and I’m the granddaughter of a police officer and the daughter of two teachers. As a child, I had an interest in engineering, which led me to receive a college scholarship to study electrical engineering. I worked at General Motors before transitioning to running a small business with my husband in Oregon. Then, I went on to serve my community in the Oregon State Legislature. I was proud to fight for Oregonians in Salem and work to ensure our voices were heard. But I knew I had to do more if I was going to build a better future for the next generation. That’s why I decided to run for Congress in 2024. It was an extremely competitive race, but with the support of this grassroots team, we flipped OR-05 from red-to-blue — and I became Oregon’s first Black U.S. Representative. I’m honored to be working for the good people of Oregon’s 5th District in Washington and fighting to deliver practical solutions to the issues impacting our communities — from working to lower costs to protecting affordable healthcare to strengthening public education. I’m proud of the work I’ve accomplished, and I’m determined to continue fighting for the next generation in Congress — and I’d appreciate your support.
