Baltimore Sun: “Senate needs to get on board with extension of expanded federal unemployment benefits”
I want to make sure you see this -- I wrote an op-ed for the Baltimore Sun about an upcoming deadline, that if missed, could have a devastating impact on hundreds of thousands of Marylanders.
On Friday, the clock will run out on extending the extra $600 per week in unemployment benefits that more than 25 million Americans -- including 671,000 Marylanders -- have been relying on since the coronavirus pandemic took hold of our country. If we don’t take action soon, the benefits will expire at the end of the month and millions of Americans will lose as much as half of their current income in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis.
Time is of the essence -- quickly, will you add your name to mine and tell the Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the Senate to do their jobs and take immediate action to extend unemployment benefits?
I was born and raised in Baltimore. I’ve made my life here, and I have to say -- it’s been painful to witness how hard this pandemic is hitting Maryland families.
The increased unemployment benefits have provided a lifeline during this difficult time. They have ensured Marylanders who have lost their jobs can keep their homes, feed their children, and go to the doctor when they’re sick.
The unemployment benefits don’t just affect individuals. They’re also essential for the well-being of our communities as a whole, helping fend off drops in consumer spending that could take an even greater toll on our economy.
COVID-19 continues to surge across the country. Our economy has not yet recovered and may never if these benefits are allowed to expire. The House took action to extend unemployment benefits, but McConnell has blocked that effort for two months.
This isn’t about politics. It’s about doing our jobs to protect the Americans we were elected to serve. Because ultimately, it will be the American people who pay the price for Congress’ inaction.
Please add your name to mine and demand McConnell and the Senate take action and extend the supplemental unemployment benefits. We can all make a difference, together.
Your friend,
Dutch
