Hi
Friend,
I entered the field of epilepsy research driven by one question: how can we prevent the development of this devastating disorder? The burden of seizures, the toll on families — it’s staggering.
Today, my lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison stands on the brink of a promising treatment breakthrough: a potential disease-modifying treatment for epilepsy that acts as a cure. We’re testing a short-term therapy that could lead to long-term seizure freedom and improved cognition, reversing some of the damage done by epilepsy. The amazing part? The drug, tofacitinib, is already FDA-approved for treating rheumatoid arthritis.
This exciting progress is only possible because of generous year-end supporters of CURE Epilepsy like you. ([link removed])

Over the past decade, four successive CURE Epilepsy grants have propelled my lab’s research at pivotal moments, supporting the development of preliminary data that helped me secure my first major federal award, an NIH R01 grant. That grant laid the foundation for deeper research and scientific discovery. However, just as we are accelerating towards the key next step of human clinical trials, federal funding uncertainty has put the brakes on our progress. Survival, not innovation, has become the norm. This is why CURE Epilepsy year-end donor support is more critical than ever ([link removed])

The kind of progress we are making doesn’t happen overnight. It takes years of dedicated research, consistent funding, and a steady pipeline of skilled scientists committed to the pursuit of a common goal. For advancements to continue, we must also invest in the future of this field by nurturing early-career scientists like my colleague, Dr. Olivia Hoffman. Her generation of researchers has the potential to find the cures for epilepsies, but only if we can keep them in our labs. Your support today ensures promising scientists like Olivia stay in this fight and keep pushing discovery forward. ([link removed])

Life-changing epilepsy research is at risk in my lab and many others. Every delay costs families valuable time. Your gift today can keep scientific momentum going. ([link removed])
One day, when the epilepsies are finally cured, people will look back at this critical time, and the people who rallied to preserve progress.
Let one of those people be you.
With heartfelt thanks,
