As Minnesota’s chief elections officer, I am in the democracy business. But the truth is, this work is personal to me in a way that goes deeper than policy or politics.

My great-grandparents fled a place where they had no freedom to choose their leaders. Their journey is why I believe so strongly that democracy must never be taken for granted.

Minnesotans almost always lead the nation in voter turnout — topping nearly 80 percent. That does not happen by accident. It happens because people trust our elections.

And we have fought hard to protect that trust.

We pushed back when the DOJ demanded private data on millions of Minnesota voters.
We challenged unlawful federal overreach — and won.
We strengthened election security while national partners were being weakened.
We prepared for scenarios we hope never occur, because that is the responsibility of this office.

But the pressures on our democracy are only growing.

And heading into 2026, we must show strength, not just on Election Day, but right now.
