2025 IN REVIEW: THE YEAR OF DEFIANCE

This year was a pivotal one in the fight for reproductive rights. It was a year marked not only by relentless attacks on our freedoms—but by our relentless defiance.

Suing the Trump Admin for Withholding Records on Medication Abortion
When the Trump administration announced plans to re-evaluate mifepristone—medication abortion proven safe and effective through decades of peer-reviewed science—based on discredited extremist policy papers rather than medical evidence, the Center demanded transparency. When officials ignored multiple Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests about their review process, we sued.

The public deserves to know whether the FDA is making decisions based on science—or political pressure. We won't stop until we have answers. [[link removed]]

Fighting Back Against Medicaid Defunding
Trump's so-called "big beautiful bill" restricted Medicaid funding for family planning clinics that provide abortion care—putting lives at risk, especially in rural areas. For providers like our client Maine Family Planning (MFP) , this threatened access to essential care for thousands of low-income patients.

MFP serves around 8,000 patients at its 18 clinics and mobile unit every year, with tens of thousands more receiving care through subcontracted clinics statewide. This attack followed another unlawful move: freezing Title X, the nation’s only dedicated family planning safety-net program.

The Center fought back. We filed FOIA requests to expose the illegal withholding of Title X funds and sued the Trump administration on behalf of MFP over the dangerous defunding of Medicaid. [[link removed]]

Exposing Efforts to Dismantle our Reproductive Rights
From day one, the Trump administration has taken unprecedented action to restrict and roll back reproductive rights—often out of public view.

Winning Expanded Protections for Midwives in Hawai'i
A 2023 law in Hawai'i placed severe restrictions on traditional midwives, worsening an already dire maternal health crisis. We challenged the law—and won. As a result, lawmakers repealed many of the harmful restrictions, protecting Native Hawaiian midwives from criminalization and expanding pathways for future providers. [[link removed]]
