An end-of-year message from CBTU Executive Director Sean Strickland

Brothers and sisters, it's hard to believe 2025 is coming to a close. As the holiday season draws near, I want to thank you for your ongoing support of Canada's Building Trades Unions and our 600,000 members! Whether you participated in one of our letter-writing campaigns, attended one of our events, engaged with us on social media, or silently cheered us on from the sidelines, your support and your advocacy is priceless. There have been so many wins for the unionized skilled trades in 2025, and it's thanks to you.
Highlights from this year include:
* $50 billion for local infrastructure in Budget 2025
* $3 billion from the federal and Ontario governments for the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station's new Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project in Ontario, which will create more than 18,000 construction jobs and support unionized careers
* $75 million over the next three years for the Union Training and Innovation Program (UTIP)
* $67 million for the Sustainable Jobs stream of UTIP to support workforce development programs
* In response to U.S. tariffs, we successfully advocated for EI program measures to support workers, including changes to the treatment of separation monies, waiving the one-week waiting period, and extended benefits for impacted workers.
* Testimony from CBTU Executive Director Sean Strickland before the Senate on the importance of passing Bill C-5
* New Investment Tax Credits (ITCs) for eligible nuclear and biomass projects
* The completion of LNG Canada Phase 1 in British Columbia, the first-ever LNG export cargo in Canadian history.
* The launch of the Major Projects Office, the announcement of the first 12 major projects, and meeting with the government to ensure organized labour has a seat at the table
* The passage of Bill C-5 and the inclusion of language stipulating that good-paying, unionized jobs must be created

As we look to 2026, we're focused on strengthening labour conditions, improving working conditions, and increasing investments in training and infrastructure.

We'll have more updates for you after the holidays, but in the meantime, have a great holiday season and a happy New Year!

Mes chers confrères et consœurs, j'ai du mal à croire que l'année 2025 touche à sa fin. À l'approche des fêtes de fin d'année, je tiens à vous remercier pour votre soutien indéfectible aux syndicats de la construction du Canada et à nos 600 000 membres! Que vous ayez participé à l'une de nos campagnes de lettres, assisté à l'un de nos événements, interagi avec nous sur les réseaux sociaux ou simplement encouragé nos efforts en silence, votre soutien et votre engagement sont inestimables. Les métiers spécialisés syndiqués ont remporté de nombreuses victoires en 2025, et c'est grâce à vous.
Les faits marquants de cette année inclus:
* 50 milliards de dollars pour les infrastructures locales dans le budget 2025.
* 3 milliards de dollars provenant des gouvernements fédéral et ontarien pour le nouveau projet de réacteur modulaire de petite taille (SMR) de la centrale nucléaire de Darlington, en Ontario, qui créera plus de 18 000 emplois dans le secteur de la construction et soutiendra les carrières syndiquées.
* 75 millions de dollars au cours des trois prochaines années pour le Programme de formation et d'innovation syndicales (PFIS)
* 67 millions de dollars pour le volet « Emplois durables » du PFIS afin de soutenir les programmes de développement de la main-d'œuvre
* En réponse aux droits de douane américains, nous avons plaidé avec succès en faveur de mesures du programme d'assurance-emploi visant à soutenir les travailleurs, notamment des modifications au traitement des indemnités de départ, la suppression de la période d'attente d'une semaine et la prolongation des prestations pour les travailleurs touchés.
* Témoignage du directeur général du CBTU, Sean Strickland, devant le Sénat sur l'importance d'adopter le projet de loi C-5.
* Nouveaux crédits d'impôt à l'investissement (CII) pour les projets nucléaires et de biomasse admissibles.
* Achèvement de la phase 1 du projet LNG Canada en Colombie-Britannique, la toute première cargaison de GNL exportée dans l'histoire du Canada.
* Le lancement du Bureau des grands projets, l'annonce des 12 premiers grands projets et la rencontre avec le gouvernement pour s'assurer que les syndicats aient leur place à la table des négociations.
* L'adoption du projet de loi C-5 et l'inclusion d'une disposition stipulant que des emplois syndiqués et bien rémunérés doivent être créés.

À l'horizon 2026, nous nous concentrons sur le renforcement des conditions de travail, l'amélioration des conditions de travail et l'augmentation des investissements dans la formation et les infrastructures.
