Hi Friend,

In the shadows of Dick Van Dam Dairy, amidst the suffering that investigator Erin Wing documented day after day during Animal Outlook's investigation of this facility, there was Samuel – a calf born into an industry that saw him as nothing more than a byproduct to be discarded in a system built on the exploitation of his mother's milk.

Samuel's story begins where many calves' stories end – on the cold concrete floors of a California dairy farm, where the air hangs heavy with the scent of ammonia and the sounds of mothers crying for their stolen babies can be heard. Like thousands before him, Samuel was destined to be separated from his mother within hours of birth, denied her warmth, her nurturing, and the milk that was meant for him but would instead be bottled for human consumption.

Samuel's eyes held something that Erin couldn't ignore. In them, she saw not just fear, but a plea – a silent cry for compassion in a place where such a concept seemed foreign. Every day, Erin witnessed workers hitting cows with wooden canes and metal pipes, spraying sick animals in the face with high-powered hoses, and leaving injured cows to languish without food, water, or medical care until they died.

In this place where suffering was the norm, where newborn calves were covered in thousands of flies with no escape, where the squalid conditions led to shocking mortality rates – Samuel represented something precious: a chance for redemption, a single life that could be spared from the cruelty.

Rescuing Samuel wasn't just an act of saving one calf. It was a declaration that his life mattered, that the industry's standard practices of violence and neglect were not acceptable, and that even in the darkest places, compassion can find a way.

Samuel is one calf who got away. But his story is an urgent reminder that millions more remain, waiting for us to hear their silent cries and respond with compassion. Will you help us make compassion a reality for millions more?

For all the calves like Samuel,
Ben Williamson
