Stories to Inspire

Hi John,
2025 is drawing to a close and I’m thinking about all the inspiring stories we made happen this year. One of the best is Sarah’s story.
When DxE investigators found Sarah at Meyenberg’s Vera Goat Dairy factory farm, *her body was failing her*. Her udders were painfully inflamed and swollen. Her baby was struggling to nurse. Around them, goats were regularly dying and their bodies were being dumped into an illegal mass grave. DxE investigators had documented the dead pile on multiple occasions and had entered the factory farm to see why and how so many goats were dying. When they saw Sarah’s pain and her baby going hungry, they jumped into action.
Thanks to the training and experience the investigators had, they were able to rescue both Sarah and her baby, who they named Johnny, as well as another baby goat off on his own with a serious respiratory infection who they named Castiel. They scooped the babies up into their arms and led Sarah out with a makeshift harness.
*For the first time in DxE’s history, our rescuers helped a mother and her baby escape to freedom together.*

Sarah got pain medication for her inflamed udders and both babies were able to nurse from her. She and Castiel were diagnosed with pneumonia. Little Castiel was in especially bad shape, burning with fever, weak, and lethargic. For weeks, he required constant care, medication, and round-the-clock bottle feeding. There were many moments when it wasn’t clear if he would survive. But he got the best care he possibly could, and that’s what ultimately helped him pull through.
*And as these three animals received life-saving care, the work continued to rescue more.
*
DxE’s legal team reported Vera Goat Dairy's violations of animal cruelty laws to the authorities, but they took no action against the company. So DxE investigators returned, this time in broad daylight to openly document the neglect and report it to police at the scene.
Inside, investigators found two young goats with nasal discharge and crusted eye discharge, indicating respiratory infections. They openly rescued these goats, now named Phoebe and Celia, and got them emergency care. Then they returned to the factory farm along with dozens of other activists to urge the authorities again to help the rest of the goats.

We will continue demanding justice for every animal being exploited, abused, and discarded like trash. As long as those in power refuse to help suffering animals, we will take the action that our humanity demands. We will rescue them, nurse them back to health, and tell their stories to the world.
Today, Sarah, Johnny, Castiel, Phoebe, and Celia are healthy, safe, and free. They climb rocks. They nap in the sun. They run through flowers. They are no longer disposable.
Their lives are a testament to what is possible for every animal.
*You can be a part of our work to give all animals the life they deserve by making a donation today. Though the end of the year, all donations up to $100,000 are being doubled, so your gift will go twice as far.* ( [link removed] )
On behalf of Sarah, Johnny, Castiel, Phoebe, and Celia, thank you!
