Hi Reader,

I expected this year to be different when President Donald Trump vowed to eliminate the Education Department. But I didn’t anticipate the mass layoffs, the abrupt end to research contracts, or the sweeping destruction of decades of institutional knowledge — especially in research and statistics work that’s mandated by Congress and has long enjoyed bipartisan support.

When federal policy changes, the ripple effects reach every classroom, college and community.

**At Hechinger, my colleagues and I focus on connecting those shifts to the people most affected.**

In the past few months, our reporting has helped:

*

**Teachers understand how federal changes will affect their classrooms.** A State Council Member for California's Teacher Association shared, "I so appreciate your research-based reporting. With how fast our world moves and the intensity of the issues we are facing,

**your work is vital to the conversations we need to have as educators**."

*

**School and college leaders prepare for shifting rules and funding.** After several stories, including ours, showed how a proposed 15-credit Pell grant requirement would hurt low-income and community college students, the provision was stripped from the final budget bill (OBBBA).

*

**Families see how policy decisions influence access, cost and opportunity.** A Maryland Parents' Coalition used our coverage on the Department of Education’s statistical changes to encourage members to submit public comments before the federal deadline.

*

**Policymakers use data and evidence to shape and enforce policies.** Citing Hechinger reporting on a missed congressionally mandated deadline, Sen. Patty Murray (D-Washington) asked a Deputy Education Secretary nominee if she would commit to delivering the full report.

**This accountability journalism exists because readers choose to support it.** During our end-of-year campaign, every dollar you give will be matched thanks to NewsMatch. Will you contribute what you can to The Hechinger Report [link removed]?

If our reporting has helped you understand an education issue, answered a question or given you context you couldn’t find elsewhere, then you’ve already experienced why this work matters.

With appreciation,

Jill Barshay
