Dear John,
Season’s greetings!
I hope 2025 has been a good year and you’re able to enjoy some time off over what will hopefully be another great Kiwi summer.
For many of us in the Waitaki summer can be a busy time. As I spend a lot of time in Wellington throughout the year I have a good list of chores to get stuck into around the house and on the farm. There may even be a chance to dust off the fishing rod too.
One of my last official duties of the year – installing signage displaying my contact details around the Waitaki electorate.
2025 has been big for our Government, as we have been working hard to fix the basics and help build the future for Kiwis.
This was a Government elected to deliver and we’ve made great progress in just two years.
Wasteful spending is down, keeping a lid on inflation and leading to more and more Kiwis rolling onto lower mortgage rates – saving them roughly $10,000 a year.
Our RMA replacement will be law by next year, creating value of up to $3 billion per year and fast-track has already seen seven projects approved.
Our trade balance is back in surplus after four years of trade deficits, and we have more money being spent by tourists in our businesses with a record number of Australian visitors coming to our shores.
New Zealand is much safer under our National-led Government, with 38,000 fewer victims of violent crime, youth offending down 16%, ram raids down 85%, more Police visible on the beat, gang patches banned, and faster trials and tougher sentences.
We are seeing transformational progress in our schools, with better attendance and academic achievement already coming through.
And there’s good progress in Health too with 16,000 more elective surgeries, 33 new cancer treatments, and 2,000 extra nurses and 500 extra doctors. We’ve signed the contract to begin construction on the New Dunedin Hospital, and Clinical Services Planning has been completed for Otago Central Lakes which will pave the way for more public health services being delivered closer to home for many in the Waitaki.
We’ve got on with the job of fixing the basics and building the future.
Finally, I hope you can enjoy a relaxing Christmas and New Year’s break with your family and friends. Please take care if you’re on the roads or around the water. I have every confidence that 2026 is going to be a great year for the Waitaki and New Zealand.
Thank you for your support.
Miles
