Dear Friend, The COVID-19 crisis is testing the limits of what our nation’s families can endure. The corresponding economic crisis has placed unparalleled strains on our country’s most vulnerable families, including immigrant families. Many immigrants are doing work that is essential to our country’s survival. Like millions of Americans, immigrants also continue to lose their jobs and access to health care as the pandemic grows worse. Despite these obvious sacrifices, Congress has excluded immigrants from receiving federal COVID-19 economic relief. How? Immigrants who file federal taxes with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) have been deemed ineligible for relief, even though they work and pay taxes like anyone else. In many cases, their U.S. citizen family members have also been denied relief simply because they are married to immigrants or have immigrants in their families. We cannot protect the nation from the coronavirus and its economic impact if we deny relief to a large segment of our communities. But you can help. Congress is gearing up to vote soon on another relief package. To fully address this crisis, we need to support all workers who have contributed to the economy and are also being devastated by the economic downturn. We need your help contacting your representatives in Congress before it’s too late. Can we count on you to email your legislators? It will take just two minutes. >>> Immigrant families have been deeply harmed by this pandemic, yet have received no financial relief. If we don’t act now, millions of tax-paying immigrants will be left without support once again. This would only exacerbate the damage that will need to be repaired in order for our country to heal. We need your voice to urge Congress to do what’s right by including immigrants in COVID-19 relief during these unprecedented times. |
