Last night, the Israeli Air Force – using fighter jets supplied by the United States – destroyed Iranian drones in Syria that were being armed with explosives for a “large scale” attack against Israel. This was the second defensive action Israel has taken against Iranian “kamikaze drones” in the past few days.

Israel’s action to limit Iran’s capabilities in Syria has significant ramifications, not only for the Jewish state but also for American forces and other allies in the region.

Ensuring Israel has the ability to defend itself, by itself is at the core of our work together. It is our responsibility to ensure bipartisan majorities in Congress understand the threats our ally faces and continue to provide the wherewithal to help in Israel’s defense.

As a result of our engagement and education over many years, Congress has helped ensure Israel had what it needed last night to prevent countless Israeli lives from being lost.

This past year, Congress allocated $3.3 billion in military assistance and $500 million in missile defense funding to help ensure Israel can confront any threat it faces.

In this incredibly divisive time filled with partisanship and political discord, this imminent Iranian threat is a stark reminder that we must always rise above the ”controversy of the day” and focus our conversations with Congress on the U.S-Israel relationship and the issues affecting Israel’s safety.

When we do that, we see what transpires: America’s ally is safer, Iran’s attempt to kill innocent Israelis was stifled, and our national security interests were advanced.

Here are two links to learn more: a story about last night’s events and a link to a video of the attack posted by the prime minister.

I will keep you posted as this story develops.

Sincerely,

Brian Shankman
