Liz Willen Dear reader,
Even in the midst of a pandemic, there are few education topics more fraught than school choice. Here at The Hechinger Report, we’ve been welcoming an array of voices and opinions on the subject, including a recent piece from Kayla Svedin ([link removed]) , an Arizona mother of four who disagreed with columnist Andre Perry’s argument ([link removed]) that the school choice movement undermines Black people’s pursuit of quality and justice in public schooling. Svedin maintains that “Black parents should be afforded the ability to exercise their agency in choosing the placement and mode of their children’s education.”
We’ve also been publishing reactions to the recent Supreme Court ruling in Espinoza v. Montana Dept. of Revenue, including this historical view ([link removed]) arguing that the decision reflects the founders’ vision of K-12 education. In the meantime, as the fights and lawsuits over school reopenings intensify, we’ll continue reporting on the many ways the pandemic ([link removed]) is affecting education. As always, we love hearing from our readers.
