John, I was very
upset when I saw this news, and I knew I had to get the word out
immediately.

Here’s what’s happening.

After surviving a shooting at my high school in Parkland, my friends and I
fought to pass the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act.
One of its most important provisions raised the minimum age to purchase a
firearm in Florida from 18 to 21. It was bipartisan, hard-fought, and
grounded in a painful truth.

The shooter who killed 17 of my classmates and teachers could not legally
buy a handgun because he was under 21. But he was able to legally purchase
an AR-15. That loophole cost lives. Closing it was the reason we raised
the age.

Now, Republicans in the Florida legislature are trying to pass HB 133, a
bill that would roll back that safeguard and once again allow teenagers to
buy the same kind of weapon used in Parkland. This is despite the fact
that roughly 80 percent of Floridians oppose lowering the minimum age to
buy firearms.

Passing HB 133 would be a betrayal of Parkland survivors and a reckless
step backward for student safety across our state.

angry. I’m disappointed in my state. But I am not giving up. So today I am
