Dear John,
Friends, we’re watching the slow-motion takeover of virtually every major media outlet and news source by Donald Trump and his ultra-rich friends.
Here’s just a partial list of the biggest media platforms now controlled by Trump’s allies:
- Elon Musk, who apparently is back as Trump’s “First Buddy,” owns Twitter/X.
- Trump friend Larry Ellison owns Paramount, which owns CBS — and could soon own Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns CNN.
- MAGA-friendly billionaire Mark Zuckerberg owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
- Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post and Amazon MGM Studios.
- Right-wing media mogul Rupert Murdoch owns Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post.
- A Trump-aligned consortium including Ellison and Trump mega-donor Marc Andreesson is angling to buy TikTok, the biggest social media platform in the world.
American democracy will not survive if a handful of Trump-friendly billionaires control everything the people see, hear, and read — and that’s exactly why Trump is using the power of his office to accelerate this consolidation and attack the shrinking number of remaining independent outlets.
It’s straight out of the same playbook that oligarchs and authoritarians have used since the beginning of time — and Inequality Media Civic Action is fighting back by using our massive following across social media to get the public the facts that Trump and his friends don’t want you to hear.
This is why I truly believe that Inequality Media Civic Action is one of the best organizations you can donate to in order to halt Trumpism and save democracy. Will you make a monthly donation to Inequality Media Civic Action today?
Let me explain how we work here at Inequality Media Civic Action, and why I’m so confident that your money will be spent well.
Our first step when launching a new campaign is to choose a target audience we want to reach, like independent voters or young people. Then we begin brainstorming various videos and scripts aimed at shifting their views about a particular candidate or key policy issue, such as inflation or immigration.
Next, we go into production. That’s when our talented team of artists, writers, and filmmakers really shine — creating some of the most eye-catching, entertaining, and informative videos you’ll ever see. (And I give them all the credit.)
The final step is to test our videos with people in the real world to see if they actually watch and share them — and, most importantly, if they change anyone’s mind. Public opinion experts say that if you can move people by 2–3 points, that’s good. But in recent months, we’ve been able to move the needle by double digits, which is huge.
Now here’s where you come in: In order to fund this operation and get our best videos out to the tens of millions of people we want to reach, we need your financial support.
But the best part of all is that we’re able to do all of this for a fraction of what the big corporate super PACs spend on TV ads. Our team is small and scrappy, and we save money by creating content that’s organically viral, so we don’t have to pay huge ad rates.
That’s why I’m asking you to make a monthly donation to help power this incredible team and stop Trump and the oligarchs buying up our media. Together we can break through the noise and get the truth to the American people.
Thank you,
Robert Reich
