John,
Details are coming out about the Republican proposal to defund Social Security, and here’s what’s clear: It’s even more dangerous than we thought―It’s a time bomb.
The Washington Post reported that they are planning to zero out FICA contributions to Social Security and Medicare, and they’re framing it as “deferred payments.” That means a minimum wage grocery worker might keep an extra $48 per paycheck now, but will be stuck with a bill for more than a thousand dollars in the first week of the Biden administration!
We can stop this―But we need to apply MAXIMUM pressure now. Chip in $7 today!
That’s the trap: If Trump is re-elected, he’ll push to cancel the deferred payments and permanently defund Social Security, then use that as an excuse to destroy the program entirely.
If Biden wins, he’ll have to either send workers a bill for thousands of dollars or cancel the repayment, weakening Social Security and Medicare’s finances!
We CAN stop the time bomb before Trump lights the fuse.
Even Republican Senators are admitting that Trump’s so-called “payroll tax” is raiding Social Security. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) said: "Social Security people think we're raiding the Social Security fund. And we are raiding it."1
Our message is getting through―chip in $7 to defuse the Social Security time bomb before it’s armed!
Here’s the bottom line: Trump has indicated that he won’t sign legislation to extend the emergency unemployment benefits that are keeping our economy afloat without a provision to undermine Social Security. This proposal puts far more money in the pockets of the wealthy and corporations than it does working people, and it does absolutely nothing for the 40 million Americans who are out of work due to the pandemic.
Instead of setting traps for the next administration, and trying to destroy our Social Security system, Congress must put people first NOW! Chip in $7 today!
Thanks,
