You would be forgiven for thinking that the deadly strikes on speedboats and fishing boats off the coast of Venezuela were about stopping the flow of drugs.

That was the official line from the White House. And the mainstream media ate it up when it was served to them.

But now that Trump and his ghoulish deputy Stephen Miller are saying the quiet part out loud, we know that was all just false pretext for their real objective: seizing Venezuela oil reserves.

Let me be clear: this is wrong. America cannot return to the days of gunboat diplomacy. We need to keep from being distracted from an economy that is breaking for so many and a government that is failing us. 

The Trump Administration is taking us down a very dark path toward war and regime change in Venezuela—an effort to seize Venezuela’s oil for the Big Oil barons that bankrolled his campaigns.

I am a first generation Mexican-American human rights attorney who has served our country in uniform. 

But my MAGA extremist opponents are very supportive of this crusade for oil. We must stop them.
