Herbert, it's Raja. Have I ever told you the story about my second-ever job?

My first job was as a newspaper boy, handing out the Peoria Journal Star at the crack of dawn in middle school.

But my second job was working at the McDonald's at the corner of University and War Memorial Drive. Back then, they put all the women on cash registers, and all the men in the back. So I literally flipped burgers to make money ( not for a photo op ).

It wasn't glamorous, and I smelled like French fries well after my shift was over, but that job taught me a lot about integrity and character. In fact, I remember my boss firing someone who tried to use a bun that fell on the ground.

He didn't fire him just because he did something unsanitary; he fired him because, to him, it mattered who his workers were when they thought no one was looking.

That's a lesson I've taken with me in every venture of my life, Herbert. It matters who you are when no one is looking, whether you're a fry cook at McDonald's or running for United States Senate.
