In 1995, Don Luis fled to the U.S. to escape civil war in El Salvador. He has lived in New Jersey for 30 years with Temporary Protected Status. TPS protects hundreds of thousands of immigrants from deportation who have escaped war, natural disasters, or other crises. But the Trump administration is working to dismantle this vital program. Today, with support from AFSC, Don Luis is advocating alongside other TPS holders to defend their right to stay in the U.S. where they belong. Here, he shares his story.
