Dear
SPUC supporter,
What a year! 2025 has been incredibly busy, with threats at the beginning and end of life across the different parliaments of the UK.

Both the Leadbeater assisted suicide bill in Westminster and the McArthur bill in Holyrood were introduced in 2024, and continued all the way through this year. Then came new threats at the beginning of life, with an amendment to decriminalise abortion in England and Wales being tabled midway through the year, and, in the last few months, equally extreme proposals in Scotland.

The craziest moment came in June, when in the space of one week, MPs voted to pass the assisted suicide bill onto the Lords, and to approve the amendment to allow self-induced abortion up to birth.

There’s no doubt that this has been a dark and difficult year. But I have been so encouraged by how you have all kept up the fight. The campaign against the assisted suicide bills in particular has been very long and gruelling, and you have kept going, keeping up the pressure on politicians.

There are good reasons to be hopeful. The scale of opposition to the Leadbeater Bill in the House of Lords has been magnitudes greater than I anticipated, and more and more people – in parliament, in the media and the general public – are being convinced that this bill is not safe and must be abandoned. This is in no small part due to your tireless efforts in the rather complicated work of writing to Members of the House of Lords.

In Scotland, MSPs are also getting more and more worried about the McArthur Bill, and we know that we only need to get a handful to change their votes to defeat it at the next stage.

There are also encouraging signs on the decriminalisation amendment. A majority of peers who spoke on it at second reading did so in opposition, and many amendments have been tabled to remove it or lessen its impact. We are expecting these amendments to be debated at Committee stage on 27^th January, so it is this that we will be turning our attention to in the New Year.

In the meantime, I just want to thank you all again for supporting our campaigning this year. Our grassroots supporters are what gives SPUC its strength, and we are so thankful for all you do.

Have a wonderful Christmas, and come back refreshed to campaign for life in 2026!

With best wishes,
Alithea Williams
