A Message from Gabe:
Greetings Rhode Islanders,
|
|
After the events of the past week, I hope Rhode Islanders can find a measure of relief now that the perpetrator of the tragic Brown University shooting is deceased and no longer a threat.

Tragically, the assailant senselessly took two young lives and forever scarred Brown, Providence, and Rhode Island. I mourn the loss of Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov. My thoughts remain with their families, the survivors of the shooting, and the entire community. As our community begins to heal, we must stand together and look out for one another.

Congressman Amo joined neighbors to mourn the two Brown students whose lives were taken and pray for the survivors.
Congressman Amo led a moment of silence on the House floor for the victims, alongside Congressman Magaziner. |
|
I offer my sincere gratitude to every Rhode Islander who stepped up to help in this difficult time. Thank you to local, state, and federal officials, especially our law enforcement officers and investigators, who dedicated an immense amount of time, effort, and thoughtfulness to seek a resolution. Additionally, I thank all of the first responders and medical professionals for their care for the wounded. This team effort made a significant impact.

Together, we have a long journey ahead. But today, I’m especially proud to be a Rhode Islander and have the honor of representing you in Congress. This holiday season, let’s cherish the people we hold dear and work towards a better future.

Sincerely,
|

Celebrating Hanukkah and Remembering the Victims at Bondi Beach

|

During this somber week in Rhode Island, we are reminded by Hanukkah that light can conquer darkness.

My thoughts are also with the Australian Jewish community after the antisemitic attack on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach. No matter where in the world it occurs, we must work to end terrorism, violence, and antisemitism.

May all those observing the holiday experience the peace and brightness our world deserves.

Working to Save Our Health Care

On January 1, due to the expiration of Affordable Care Act enhanced premium tax credits, the cost of health care will skyrocket for more than 40,000 Rhode Islanders, according to statistics provided by HealthSource RI, Rhode Island's health insurance marketplace. After months of Democrats urging, Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has not allowed the House to vote to extend these tax credits.

Democrats have repeatedly called for a vote to extend these critical tax credits. This week, four Republicans joined all 214 Democratic House members to force Speaker Johnson to have a vote to extend the credits. However, Speaker Johnson is delaying a vote until January — AFTER health care prices have already skyrocketed for tens of thousands of Rhode Islanders.

The 22 million Americans who rely on these health care tax credits deserve affordable care. And it will hurt health care for all of us if fewer Rhode Islanders have health coverage. At 218 Democratic and Republican House members combined, there is a bipartisan majority of the House that wants to extend ACA tax credits.

In Congress, I will not stop working to lower costs, stop the cuts, save health care, and extend ACA tax credits.

Remembering A.T. Wall

|
Congressman Gabe Amo speaks on the House floor to honor the memory of former Director of the Rhode Island Department of Corrections, A.T. Wall.

A.T. was a dedicated husband, father, and criminal justice leader. After a life-changing internship with the juvenile justice system in New Haven while an undergraduate at Yale, he dedicated his career to making the Rhode Island Department of Corrections more just and restorative.

During his lengthy tenure, A.T. founded groundbreaking programs offering medication-assisted treatment for inmates struggling with substance-use disorders and training service dogs for disabled veterans. He dedicated his professional life to fostering second chances.

A man of deep faith and dedication, A.T. was always happy to lend a helping hand to anyone, including me. My thoughts are with his wife Maria, his children Harrison and my dear friend, Ash, his grandchildren, and his extended family. He will be missed.
