Last week, during a House Homeland Security Committee hearing, I confronted Secretary of Homeland Security Krisi Noem with a reality she has spent months trying to evade: her actions have consequences. Noem lies with impunity, she rejects checks and balances, and she ignores Congress and the courts. Her options are limited: either she’s going to resign, Trump’s going to fire her, or she will be impeached. And I’ve already started working on her impeachment.

I made it clear that her patterns of dishonesty, defiance of congressional oversight, and disregard to court orders cannot continue. When a cabinet secretary operates as if checks and balances don’t apply to them, accountability is no longer optional—it becomes necessary.

Under Noem’s leadership, the Department of Homeland Security has encouraged racial profiling and the dehumanization of our neighbors. We have seen due process trampled, families terrorized and separated, and court rulings ignored. DHS and ICE are participating in gross abuses of power, and their unlawful acts are only continuing to grow bolder.

Even more disturbing, we’ve watched elected officials, judges, and students targeted and arrested on charges so thin they collapse under scrutiny—manufactured by right-wing extremists to justify intimidation and silence dissent. This is what happens when an agency meant to protect the public is weaponsized for political ends. This is what happens when authoritarian leaders are given free reign to weaponize federal agencies for political ends.

Noem is not fit to hold her office. I’m taking the first steps toward impeachment and formally calling on the Judiciary Committee to open an investigation into her lawlessness. No official, no matter their title, is above the Constitution.
