You've made cruelty controversial. Now let’s make it illegal.

This is extraordinary. A top lawmaker publicly used the word “controversial” while talking about overturning animal protection laws:

“Senate Agriculture Committee Chair John Boozman (R-Ark.) said he wants to pursue a farm bill that avoids controversial policies … That means the legislation may not include some agriculture industry-friendly priorities, such as … measures to address California’s Proposition 12.”

Over the last few months, people like you have encouraged over 200 Democrat and Republican senators and representatives to sign letters in favor of upholding animal protection laws. You are the reason animal abuse has become controversial in Congress.

But the industry isn’t letting up without a fight. It never does. House Ag Committee Chair G.T. Thompson is still insisting on including anti-Prop 12 language in the Farm Bill. And the industry is pivoting, looking for new ways to keep treating animals like disposable products rather than living beings.

If factory farmers get their way, millions of sensitive animals will be condemned to extreme suffering and confinement, with no end in sight. Defending them will require sustained advocacy, legal expertise, and the ability to mobilize thousands of people at a moment’s notice.
