With the new year just around the corner, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the Democratic successes we’ve seen this year.
Across the country, voters delivered a clear message: it’s time for change. Democrats flipped 21 percent of all previously Republican-held seats, winning decisive victories in communities that had long been Republican strongholds.
Here in Massachusetts, we saw big wins in legislative special elections bringing two new Democrats in Hannah Bowen and Lisa Field to the statehouse. In our local elections, we welcomed six new Mayors-elect and celebrated Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s historic win.
The momentum carried nationwide, with victories in Virginia with Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger and New Jersey with Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill.
Wins in major municipal and state elections only add to the story, with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani taking in over 50 percent and Miami Mayor-elect Eileen Higgins drawing an overwhelming 60 percent of the vote. Pennsylvania Democrats held strong, retaining three state Supreme Court Judges and electing the first-ever Democratic district attorney in Bucks County. In the Virginia House of Delegates, Democrats flipped more than 12 seats, increasing their majority to a historic 64 seats.
In the New Jersey General Assembly, Democrats expanded their majority, with their largest margin of victory since 1973. And in states like Iowa, Mississippi and Georgia, Democrats won critical races, breaking Republican supermajorities and flipping seats by wide margins.
But just as important as who voters chose to lead was the issues they chose to support. Across the country, we had ballot question wins in California that will ensure transparency in governance and in Maine to protect how and where people cast their ballots.
All together, these victories around the nation, and with our six new democratic Mayors here at home, reflect a growing desire for fairness, equality and truth. And in 2026, we must continue to capture this energy and build upon it.
