Hi John,
It’s easy to feel powerless in light of the unprecedented challenges our community is facing. But the truth is that when we come together, we can create real change.
Here are some simple ways you can take action to support immigrant communities:
➣ Stay vigilant and know your rights. If you are approached by ICE officers, you have the right to remain silent, the right to say no to a request to search your belongings, the right to refuse entry into your home, and the right to speak to a lawyer — especially before signing any documents.
➣ Advocate for immigrant rights. You can make your voice heard by contacting your representative, sharing information on social media, and sharing positive stories about immigrants to counter harmful propaganda.
➣ Record public ICE arrests. You have a First Amendment right to record in public spaces (though some states have specific rules about audio recordings and secret recordings). Maintain a safe distance, do not interfere with the arrest, and comply if officers ask you to back up or move.
➣ Donate to organizations that support immigrants. This December, Voto Latino is putting real help into the hands of immigrant and mixed-status families in the communities that need it most — especially where ICE enforcement is creating fear. Your generous support will directly impact a family in need.
Immigrant rights are human rights — and together, we can demand dignity and protection for everyone seeking safety.
