Dear John,
In our home, I’m the keeper of the family’s traditions and history.
While I was raised Catholic, my husband, Kurt, is Jewish, and we celebrate Jewish holidays.
I started dating Kurt when we were in law school together, and he invited me to drive to Los Angeles to meet his parents. They were so welcoming, their house became my home.
Kurt’s father, a Holocaust refugee who left Germany in 1937, quickly became one of my best friends. I honor his memory through our celebrations.
Hanukkah is a special time in our house. The centerpiece of our celebration is a beautiful blue tablecloth I asked Kurt’s father for, and the family’s Hanukkah menorah, passed down from Kurt’s grandmother.
Every year, my son Jax and I put up the Hanukkah decorations, set the table, and then we have a throwdown about who makes the best latkes. It’s competitive, and they may deny it, but mine are the best, perfectly crispy on the outside!

The Hanukkah story is one of survival against all odds. We’ve faced many challenges this year, and we must remain steadfast in our commitment to fighting hate.
As we light the candles each night, let us remember the resilience that marks this tradition and count our blessings as we share time together.
