Higher cost, worse coverage: Affordable Care Act enrollees say expiring subsidies will hit them hard

— AP News, December 2025

Kelley Bruns said she is concerned that if something happens to their health in the next year, they could go bankrupt. While their monthly fees are low at about $25, their new out-of-pocket maximum at $21,000 amounts to nearly half their joint income.

“We have to pray that we don’t have to have surgery or don’t have to have some medical procedure done that we’re not aware of,” she said. “It would be very devastating.”

The plan that Mike Johnson and the Republican party have released does nothing to protect the ACA subsidies that keep health care affordable for millions of families nationwide.

This isn’t a partisan issue — folks on both sides of the aisle, whether they voted red or blue last election, agree that protecting these subsidies is crucial to keeping hospitals open and health care affordable.

We’re heading into the last legislative week of the year; Republicans are running out of time. That’s why we need to fight for a Democratic majority that will put the American people FIRST.

Will you pitch in right now to stand with me in the fight for affordable health care?
