As the end of the year quickly approaches, we wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season. Please note that garbage will not be collected on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. During these two weeks, collection will be delayed by one day.
Village Hall facilities will be closed Dec. 24 and 25 in observance of the Christmas holiday, and Jan. 1 in observance of New Year's Day. Police and Public Works employees will continue to work on the holidays to ensure our community remains safe and operational.
The Village of Oswego has approved Finnegan’s Law, a new ordinance developed in partnership with The Finnegan Project to help prevent vehicle into building crashes. The initiative honors two-year-old Finnegan Trooper McKee, whose life was tragically lost in July when a vehicle struck a local restaurant.
In the wake of this incident, Village President Ryan Kauffman directed Village staff to explore ways to prevent similar tragedies. At the Oct. 7 Committee of the Whole meeting, the Village Board reviewed proposed amendments that would require certain newly constructed buildings and outdoor uses to install vehicle impact protection devices, such as bollards or planters at entrances and unprotected walls. The Board unanimously supported the proposal and moved the ordinance through the formal process.
The Finnegan Project, founded by Finnegan’s parents, Schyler and Christina McKee, advocates for protective barriers at public venues and supports families affected by similar incidents. The organization also raises awareness about the frequency of vehicle into building crashes and the effectiveness of safety infrastructure.
Finnegan’s Law adds new requirements to the Village’s Unified Development Ordinance, including standards for placement, impact resistance, spacing and appearance. The Village will now assist The Finnegan Project in advocating for broader legislative changes and will provide outreach to existing businesses with guidelines that can improve pedestrian and vehicular safety.
