Email from Los Angeles Police Protective League Daily News & Updates   Law Enforcement News Who’s running the LAPD? Chief’s style draws mixed reviews in first year Over the last year, The Times spoke with numerous sources, from high-ranking commanders to beat cops on the street, along with recently retired LAPD officials and longtime department observers, to gather insights on McDonnell’s first 12 months as the city’s top cop. But the lack of progress on the issue (discipline) has started to rankle the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union for officers below the rank of lieutenant. The League urged McDonnell to take action in a statement to The Times. “The way we see it, the Chief is either going to leverage his mandate and implement change, much to the chagrin of some in his command staff that staunchly support the status quo, or he will circle the wagons around the current system and continue to run out the clock,” the statement read. ”There’s no need to keep booking conference rooms to meet and talk about ‘fixing discipline,’ it’s time to fish or cut bait.” Los Angeles Times BWC: Man charges at LAPD cops swinging 7-foot cluster of wires before fatal OIS The LAPD released bystander and body camera video showing a fatal officer-involved shooting of a man who charged at officers while swinging a cluster of metal wires at them. The Nov. 11 incident began when officers were dispatched to a call of a man hitting vehicles and attempting to hit people with a large chain or wire, according to the release. “He’s hitting everything,” a caller can be heard saying on 911 call audio. “He’s very violent, you have to bring somebody else,” the caller says as the officers arrived to respond. “He’s attacking them.” Bystander video shows an officer approaching the man, who was holding a cluster of wires around seven feet in length. The man initially dropped the wires when instructed to do so by the officer, according to the release. Video shows the suspect picking the wires back up, at which point the officer shot him with a foam round from a less lethal launcher. The man then dropped the wires as he reacted to being struck with the round. He momentarily began to follow the officer’s instructions before once again picking up the wires. He began to swing the wires at the officer, striking the ground near his feet multiple times. He charged forward at the officers, swinging the wires in a circle overhead as the officer continued to deploy less lethal rounds. PoliceOne 2 men steal over $200,000 worth of jewelry from Los Angeles shop Two suspects remain at large after stealing over $200,000 worth of jewelry from a store in L.A.’s Pico-Union neighborhood. On Dec. 16, surveillance video captured the men approaching the entrance of GOOD ART HLYWD on the 1000 block of Venice Boulevard around 4:30 p.m. A security guard was standing outside, as the store typically accepts most of its customers by appointment only. The men flashed a large sum of cash and said they were looking for a gift for their father. They asked if they could be shown some jewelry pieces. The security guard let them inside to browse. At one point, the men told a store associate said they needed to grab a credit card from their car outside. After exiting, however, neither of them returned. That’s when the employee who was assisting them realized that two pieces of high-end jewelry were missing. KTLA 5 Loved ones search for missing 76-year-old Southern California man Family members are still searching for a Southern California man who has been missing for over a month. Antonio Dichoso Arriola, 76, was reported missing on Nov. 15, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Arriola was last seen on the 400 block of Serrano Avenue in L.A.’s Koreatown neighborhood. He is described as an Asian man who stands 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 153 pounds. He has brown eyes, black hair and freckles on his face. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and carrying a green backpack. It’s unclear where he may have been heading when he disappeared. His family noted that, given the state of his mental health, he may not be able to identify himself and that he requires a cane to walk. They have not heard from him since and are very concerned for his well-being. Anyone who may know Arriola’s whereabouts or has information on the case can call the LAPD’s Missing Persons Unit at 213-996-1800. During non-business hours or on weekends, calls can be directed to 1-877-527-3247. KTLA 5 LA homeowner uses AirTag to track thieves, stolen goods A Larchmont-area homeowner says his house was burglarized for the second time this year after masked suspects were captured on security video climbing over a wall, then breaking through a glass door and ransacking the residence while he was away at a holiday party. The homeowner, who asked not to be identified, shared the surveillance footage with FOX 11. It shows three suspects casing the property before forcing their way inside Saturday evening. "We noticed that the French door to the backyard is broken and we realized…it happened again. It was just a huge shock to us," he said. "I’m just tired of it — twice was enough - once was enough!" The break-in marked the second burglary at the home in less than a year. In January, the homeowner said more sophisticated intruders jammed the home’s Wi-Fi system and stole nearly all valuables inside. This time, there was less to take — but the suspects inadvertently left behind a clue. "I realized that the contents of my briefcase - the laptop and iPad in my briefcase - was on the bed," he said, realizing that the thieves must have taken it. "And then I thought - wait a minute - there’s an AirTag! So I went to my phone and I tried to find it, and it was still on, and two blocks away from here." The homeowner had already filed a police report, so he contacted the Los Angeles Police Department again in hopes officers could quickly help recover the stolen property. Strong winds were blowing through the Valley Glen and North Hollywood area when a tree fell across Bluebell Avenue, blocking the roadway around 6:45 p.m. A motorist crashed into the downed tree, leaving the SUV undrivable. The driver appeared to be OK, but a tow truck was required to remove the vehicle, according to news video service RMG News. Bluebell Avenue remained closed as crews worked to clear the debris. About 30 minutes later, a massive tree came down during high winds in Granada Hills. A Mercedes-Benz parked on Tribune Street near White Oak Avenue was crushed under the weight of the tree. No one was inside the vehicle at the time. One resident said she had previously expressed concerns about the neighborhood’s trees, but nothing was done.
