Friend, for a long, long time, Republicans have pretended to be defenders of free speech.

Yesterday, we learned again what we already knew: Trump doesn’t give a damn about free speech, and he is willing to use the power of the federal government to silence his critics.

The FCC is supposed to be an independent agency. Hours before this hearing, their website said as much. After this disastrous hearing, the word “independent” had magically vanished from their mission statement.

The simple truth is that Trump appointee Brendan Carr has turned the Federal Communications Commission into the Federal Censorship Commission. They want to intimidate news stations and journalists into towing the line — just look at how they tried to bully ABC into canceling Jimmy Kimmel.

Ed Markey will continue to use every tool he has available to hold Trump’s corrupt administration accountable, and that includes standing up to folks like the FCC chair or anyone else who tries to roll back America’s founding principles of free speech and free press.
